English Major Course Level 8

In this course, students will build on their language learning from Level 7. This will be achieved through a specific focus on key texts, action words, reading exercises, listening exercises, writing practice and math. Lessons will present units themed around relevant and engaging topics such as energy and natural resources, mechanical inventions, and global exploration. Each unit offers scaffolded lessons that build critical vocabulary—including focus nouns, verbs, and adjectives—while developing functional and descriptive language for both oral and written communication. Lessons feature modelled conversations, content-rich reading passages, and phonics readers that help learners expand their understanding of more complex topics and language structures.

Phonics and word study at Level 8 introduce advanced patterns and sounds, such as diphthongs, vowel teams, and less common blends. Students read and spell words with long vowels, r-controlled vowels, and multisyllabic structures, reinforcing fluency and decoding skills through targeted phonics stories, rhymes, and spelling practice.

In grammar, students will be given instruction that deepens understanding of complex sentence structures, verb tenses, modals, conjunctions, and other functional parts of speech. Grammar points are taught through contextual examples and reinforced with guided and independent activities throughout each lesson.

Mathematics is integrated in every unit through age-appropriate topics such as number sentences, multiplication, temperature reading, and problem-solving using real-world data. These activities develop numerical reasoning and allow students to use mathematical language in context.

This Level 8 offers a rich, academically-oriented experience for upper primary students or intermediate-level ESL learners. Through the integration of vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening, speaking, and writing, this course equips learners with the skills they need to think critically, communicate effectively, and write with confidence in English.
